The post How to write a literature review and prepare the bibliography appeared first on Educational Articles For Researchers, Students And Authors - Editage Blog.
]]>Below are some steps to take for writing a literature review.
Start by asking yourself what research has already been done on the topic, what are some relevant sub-topics, and who are the prominent authors of such work so you can be sure to include their citations. Track other authors who have published similar work and refer to the reference lists or bibliographies in their publications as well. You should also check which studies have cited the ones that you are reviewing.
Make the most of the vast array of databases and tools available, and do not restrict yourself to one or few search engines and databases. Visit your university library and if needed, contact academic librarian for guidance on where to source specialist resources and citations related to your search. You may even consult gray literature. Use effective keywords and Boolean operators to refine your results. Check the search results for relevance, credibility, and recency. Critically analyze the selected literature for methodologies, strengths, and limitations. Try to unravel patterns and synthesize diverse perspectives.
As you keep finding relevant articles, take notes and summarize them. Meticulously record any special observations you may have for each study you want to cite. Use these notes when writing a summary in your review. Avoid copy-pasting text; try and summarize studies in your own words.
After finalizing your list of studies to include, start with writing an engaging introduction that contextualizes the research problem and outlines the objectives. Generate central themes, theories, or methodologies, which will form the basis of your headings for your literature review.
The concluding paragraphs should underscore the implications of the reviewed literature on research design, theoretical frameworks, and future inquiries. Ensure that all your in-text citations and entries in end-of-article reference list or bibliography correspond with each other. Look for citations that may have been missed in the reference list/bibliography and vice versa. Once again, using reference-management software makes this immensely convenient.
Your initial drafts of the literature review might be messy. Sometimes, re-reading your draft or even taking a break from the subject will give you clarity and help you tighten the narrative. Share your drafts with your peers and mentors and actively seek feedback. Act on the feedback, incorporating the comments and criticism, including any relevant references. This will only make the final output better!

]]>When you decide on a research topic, usually the first step you take in the direction of conducting research is learn more about the previous research published on the topic, and this eventually translates into literature review when you write your research paper. Many researchers struggle when it comes to writing literature reviews for their research paper.
A literature review is a comprehensive review and analysis of published literature that relates to a particular research topic or question being studied. Various forms of literature are reviewed that can include journal articles, books, magazine and blog articles, published abstracts, conference proceedings, and dissertations. Literature review in research is one of the pillars on which your research idea stands since it provides context, relevance, and background to the research problem you are exploring.
Literature reviews can be categorized as experimental and theoretical. Experimental literature review basically refers to surveying all the information available on a particular topic and critically analyzing the gaps that need to be worked upon. In this sense, it essentially forms the first experiment of any research project. The more extensive the review, the more precise and systematic the research project will be. Therefore, it is one of the most critical parts of one’s research.
Every research report, thesis, dissertation and research article begins with an introduction to the topic of research. This forms the literature review for the article. The literature review’s main purpose is to introduce readers to the need for research. A literature review should begin with a thorough literature search using the main keywords in relevant online databases.
The Background of a literature review introduces the readers to the field of study. Recent progress on the study topic which can be organized thematically or chronologically. Once a problem statement has been defined, the strengths and pitfalls of other studies that have tackled the problem statement should be discussed. This is important for outlining the need and novelty of the research.
A literature review should be a critical and analytical summary of the selected literature that guides the readers through the central theme of the research.
Stand alone articles fall into 2 categories, narrative reviews and systematic reviews.
These are theoretical discussions of relevant information on a particular topic and its critical analysis. These are mostly qualitative in nature similar to the review sections of larger articles.
Systematic reviews follow a well-planned methodology to qualitatively or quantitatively analyze a defined number of studies. They usually focus on a single question and have clear study objectives that are worked on systematically.
Before starting to write a review, it is important to determine what kind of review you want to write and follow the appropriate style and guidelines. An effective literature review is important for the complete life cycle of a research from defining the right research goals to correctly interpreting and presenting the research results.

]]>The post Saudi Vision 2030 and the Kingdom’s Research Landscape appeared first on Educational Articles For Researchers, Students And Authors - Editage Blog.
]]>Seven years later, Saudi Arabia has taken several steps to promote research and innovation as key drivers of the country’s development. With increased government funding and support for research, Saudi Arabia has been able to attract both local and international talent to lead important research projects and institutions. Further, Vision 2030 has led to partnerships with leading universities and research institutions worldwide. These partnerships bring in global expertise, knowledge, and best practices, further enhancing the quality and impact of research in Saudi Arabia. Let’s take a look at some of the exciting new initiatives and avenues in different fields that have opened up in the Kingdom, spurred by Vision 2030.
A key part of Vision 2030 is improving access to healthcare, modernizing facilities and equipment, and ensuring a long, healthy and productive lifespan for Saudi citizens. In August 2023, the Saudi Cabinet approved the establishment of a National Institute for Health Research [i], which will oversee and support translational research and clinical trials in the country. It will also actively engage in research in fields like preventive care, translational medicine, telehealth, and diagnostics.
A research field that has recently gained momentum in the country is genomics. Saudi Arabia has been considered an ideal country for the exploration of new genetic variants, owing to its high rate of consanguinity (>60% of marriages).[ii] The Saudi Human Genome Program, which involves building a genetic database for Saudi citizens, aims to identify genetic basis of various inherited diseases through next-generation sequencing and to create the first Saudi genetic map. At present, over 7500 pathogenic variants have been identified under this program, the results of which have been reported in over 140 peer-reviewed papers. [iii]
In addition to measures to prevent genetic disease, comprehensive large-scale geriatric care is another emerging requirement in Saudi Arabia. Anticipating an increase in its elderly population by 2035,[iv] Saudi Arabia has begun to pay increasing attention to research on aging and a healthy lifespan (healthspan). Hevolution Foundation, a nonprofit funded by the Saudi government, has recently announced its intentions to invest up to $1 billion annually in aging research and healthspan science.[v] It will also host the Global Healthspan Summit in November 2023, bringing together over 100 researchers, policymakers, and entrepreneurs from not just Saudi Arabia but also the UK, the US, and Europe.[vi]
On another note, as Saudi Arabia aims to become a Net Zero economy by 2060, sustainability is a key part of Vision 2030. The Saudi Arabian government launched the Sustainable Tourism Global Center, a global hub for research on carbon neutrality in the tourism sector.[vii] Researchers from countries including the US, China, France, and Spain will be involved in this center’s initiatives.[viii]
Alongside sustainability, energy, especially atomic energy, is likely to be an emerging hot topic among Saudi researchers. One of the aims of Vision 2030 is to diversify the Kingdom’s economy by reducing dependence on oil. Saudi Arabia is constructing a low power research reactor, intended for research, development, and training in the fields of nuclear and related sciences.[ix] In September 2023,[x] Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman announced the country’s decision to switch from light-touch oversight by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA; the UN’s atomic watchdog) and instead adopt IAEA’s stringent Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.[xi] This move paves the way for the country to expand its nascent nuclear research plans and become a noteworthy player in the global nuclear research landscape.
Beyond healthcare and sustainability, the Saudi government has recognized the need to future-proof its workforce, especially the academic workforce. Saudi Arabia aims to become a global leader in innovation, aiming to spend 2.5 percent of the country’s GDP on research and development by 2040. And recognizing the growing importance of artificial intelligence technologies, Saudi Arabia has planned to invest $20 billion in artificial intelligence projects by 2030.[xii] The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, in support of Vision 2030, has announced its aims to “to elevate the Kingdom as a global leader in the elite league of data-driven economies.”[xiii] In 2023, Prime Minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved the establishment of the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics [xiv] and also announced plans for a new institute of the Global Cybersecurity Forum in Riyadh.[xv] These measures will boost technical skills and digital literacy not only within academia but also in the general workforce.
In summary, Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 represents a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to transforming the country’s research landscape. By diversifying the economy, increasing funding for research and development, and fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, the plan aims to position Saudi Arabia as a hub for knowledge and innovation, reducing its reliance on oil and ensuring long-term economic sustainability.

]]>Let’s start with the basics. They are a machine learning algorithm used for both classification and regression tasks. In a Random Forest, a collection of decision trees is created, each trained on a different subset of the data with some randomness introduced during the tree-building process. These individual trees then “vote” on the outcome (in classification) or contribute predictions (in regression), and the final result is a combination of these contributions. This ensemble approach often results in more robust and accurate predictions compared to using a single decision tree.
Random Forests belong to the family of ensemble learning methods, where multiple models (decision trees in the case of Random Forests) are combined to improve predictive accuracy and reduce overfitting (i.e., where the model learns the training data so well that it can’t generalize to any other data).
Let’s look at the main reasons random forests are becoming increasingly popular in biomedical research:
Here’s a step-by-step guide to using Random Forests to analyze big biomedical data:
1. Data Preprocessing
2. Train Your Forest
3. Evaluate Your Model
4. Tune Your Model
5. Interpret the Results
Random Forests have found extensive applications in biomedical research:
Conclusion
Big biomedical data is a treasure trove of information waiting to be unlocked. Random Forests offer a robust and versatile tool for researchers working with big data. With the ability to handle high-dimensional data and imbalanced datasets, Random Forests can help you make sense of complex biological systems.

]]>The post Predictive Modeling in Biomedical Research: Harnessing Big Data with Machine Learning appeared first on Educational Articles For Researchers, Students And Authors - Editage Blog.
]]>So what exactly is predictive modeling? It’s like a crystal ball, but for data! With the power of machine learning, we can train algorithms to predict what might happen in the future based on patterns hidden within historical data. Predictive modeling helps you to predict future outcomes or behaviors based on patterns found in the data you provide the model with.
In biomedical research, predictive modeling involves training algorithms on large datasets containing information such as patient demographics, genetic profiles, clinical observations, and treatment outcomes. The trained models can then be used to make predictions, identify potential biomarkers, understand disease mechanisms, and optimize treatment strategies.
Let’s take a look at the various ways in which biomedical researchers can benefit from using machine learning for predictive modeling:
Despite the above benefits, there are some important limitations in machine learning that biomedical researchers need to be aware of:
Let’s take the example of a study where researchers aim to predict the likelihood of a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack, for patients with specific risk factors. They compile a dataset containing information on patients’ age, gender, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, smoking habits, and historical cardiovascular events.
By employing a classification model, the researchers can train the algorithm on this dataset to learn patterns associated with past cardiovascular events. Once the model is trained, it can predict the probability of future cardiovascular events for new patients based on their risk factors.
Machine learning brings a powerful arsenal of tools to biomedical research, revolutionizing predictive modeling and enabling researchers to gain deeper insights and make data-driven decisions. Predictive modeling using machine learning has become an invaluable asset for biomedical researchers in leveraging big data to learn more about diseases, treatments, and patient outcomes. By embracing these powerful techniques, researchers can accelerate discoveries and ultimately improve human health and well-being.

]]>The post The Pros and Cons of Bayesian and Frequentist Statistics in Biomedical Research appeared first on Educational Articles For Researchers, Students And Authors - Editage Blog.
]]>Picture this: You’re conducting a clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a new drug to treat a rare disease. With Frequentist statistics, you’ll be following the classic, well-trodden path that most researchers have been walking on for years, using tests such as ANOVA, t-tests, etc.
a. Objectivity: Frequentist methods are considered objective since they do not involve prior beliefs or subjective judgments. The results are purely based on the data collected during the study.
b. P-values: Ah, the famous P-value! Frequentist statistics rely on this little number to test hypotheses. It helps you determine whether the observed effect is statistically significant or simply due to chance.
c. Confidence Intervals: Frequentist statistics provide confidence intervals, which show the range of values within which the true population parameter is likely to lie. This helps researchers understand the precision of their estimates.
d. Long-standing Tradition: Frequentist statistics have been the cornerstone of clinical research for a long time. Many peer reviewers, journals and regulatory agencies are familiar with these methods, making it easier to communicate your findings.
a. Limited Use of Prior Information: Frequentist methods ignore prior information, which might be valuable in certain cases. By neglecting prior knowledge, you might miss out on important insights.
b. P-value Misinterpretation: Relying solely on P-values can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations of results. Remember, statistical significance doesn’t necessarily mean the results are clinically or practically meaningful!
Now, let’s tread the less-beaten path of Bayesian statistics. It might seem daunting at first, but trust me, it has its own charm and advantages!
a. Prior Knowledge: Unlike Frequentist methods, Bayesian statistics allow us to incorporate prior knowledge and beliefs about the parameters in our analysis. This can be invaluable in situations where historical data or expert opinions are available.
b. Probability Statements: Bayesian statistics provide probability distributions for parameters, giving us a more intuitive understanding of uncertainty. Instead of just declaring “statistical significance,” we get to know the probability that a parameter falls within a certain range.
c. Smaller Sample Sizes: Bayesian methods can be more efficient, especially when dealing with limited data. They often require smaller sample sizes to achieve comparable results to Frequentist approaches.
d. Iterative Learning: With Bayesian statistics, we can update our beliefs as we gather more data. This iterative learning process allows us to continuously refine our understanding of the problem at hand.
a. Subjectivity: Bayesian methods involve incorporating prior beliefs, which introduces some level of subjectivity into the analysis. This can be a double-edged sword, as it might lead to biased results if the prior is poorly specified.
b. Complexity: Bayesian statistics can be more challenging to implement and require a good understanding of probability theory and computational methods.
c. Limited Popularity: Because of their complexity, journals may find it difficult to source peer reviewers who are comfortable with manuscripts where Bayesian statistics are used. Further, relatively few reporting guidelines (aside from the SAMPL guidelines) cover Bayesian statistics.
Embrace the Hybrid Approach!
As biomedical researchers, it’s crucial to recognize that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to statistics. Instead of choosing one side over the other, consider adopting a hybrid approach. Utilize the strengths of both Bayesian and Frequentist methods depending on your research question, available data, and prior knowledge.
For instance, in exploratory studies, where prior information is scarce, you might lean more towards Frequentist methods. On the other hand, if you have substantial historical data or expert opinions on a treatment’s efficacy, Bayesian methods can complement your analysis.
Remember, statistics is not about following rigid rules but embracing uncertainty and making informed decisions. Stay curious, keep learning, and don’t shy away from exploring the road less traveled!
